On August 23, 2023, ISRO achieved a historic milestone with the successful landing of Chandrayaan 3, bringing pride to the entire country. Let's understand what this mission is and why it's important. |
Chandrayaan 3:
Chandrayaan 3 was launched by the Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM-3) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, on July 14, 2023.
Objectives:
1. Demonstrate safe and soft landing on the lunar surface.
2. Showcase lunar rover exploration.
3. Conduct scientific experiments.
The mission consists of three components:
1. Vikram Lander:
- Will perform a safe landing near the southern pole of the Moon.
- Equipped with 4 payloads.
2. Pragyan Rover:
- Will conduct research and experiments on the lunar surface.
- Equipped with 2 payloads.
3. Propulsion Module:
- Provides necessary thrust and propulsion for spacecraft maneuvering.
- Equipped with 1 payload.
Payloads and Their Functions:
The mission comprises a total of 7 payloads.
Payloads on Vikram Lander:
1. RAMBHA:
Measures characteristics of charged particles in the Moon's exosphere and atmosphere.
2. ChaSTE:
Studies thermal characteristics and temperature of the lunar surface.
3. ILSA:
Studies lunar seismic activity, focusing on earthquakes.
4. LRA:
A NASA payload for laser ranging studies.
Vikram Lander also carries an additional payload:
* LHDAC:
Lander Hazard Detection and Avoidance Camera, designed to identify hazards during descent.
Payloads on Pragyan Rover:
1. APX:
Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer, identifies elements on the lunar surface.
2. LIBS:
Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope, measures elemental abundance.
Payload on Propulsion Module:
- This payload controls the spacecraft.
Importance of Chandrayaan 3:
